Robert Cray Band “Smoking Gun” Live Tube ‘86
Modern blues maestro Robert Cray and his band perform “Smoking Gun” from his superb “Strong Persuader” album, live on C4UK music show “The Tube” in Im guessing 1986? or maybe early 1987!!!, anyway great performance, slight break up of picture at end of song (excuse 21 year old cheap videotape). More Robert Cray band comin soon!.

Wannabes should study his performances.
Brilliant and pertinent, not over-the-top with flash, but geniusly bright!
Not a flash-in-the-pan, a sustainable force to be enjoyed over a long passage of time.
Buy any of his stuff, and it will just as fresh 20 years from now as it was when it was first released!

Totally agree with you on his voice. This guy has amazing talent, haven’t heard much of him lately though

the one thing that sets robert cray apart from al the other blues guitarist is his voice so unique, rich and powerful. his diction is so clear, you can hear every word he sings and hi range is unbelievable (listen to ‘trick or treat’ or ‘bouncing back’). he probably would have been just as popular had he just been a vocalist. my dad and i saw robert cray when he came to new zealand in ‘02′ was an absolutely amazing concert one of the best i’ve ever been to.

Please bear in mind the Cray video playing now, is 20 odd years old. This is a quite raw Cray, listen to his later albums, and there you will know and understand where I’m coming from. Thanks to DantheDem for his eloquent reply.

Disagree. EC is god. I love Clapton’s and Cray’s music. Clapton is my idol and Robert is not too far behind him. I can only speak as to personal taste, and as such, I have to say EC is better. Robert is always in my collection I listen to him quite a bit. Both EC and RC are amazing, Robert’s voice definitely has way more soul but EC’s playing sounds better to me. But RC has a tone all his own and is truly amazing in his own right.

Getting back to the Clapton vs Cray thing,Clappo is a great player, but has no feeling,he plays like a brain surgeon, perfect, but no soul.Cray plays with so much feeling and soul, chalk and cheese in my book, any one agree/disagree? No abuse please, only sane debate.

your ridiculous. ever heard of STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN? white man, and could play the ever living hell out of the blues, jazz, and rock. just watch him play texas flood live at el mocambo. for that instance, any song live anywhere. all the el mocambo stuff though, especially. robert cray is one of my idols and is amazing, but what you said is ridiculous.

Please dont compare.
A black man have a much better sound when singing than a white guy. Don’t forget it’s there music no white man will ever be better.
And about his guitar playing he also have more blues than any white guy.
How much guitar players can play like him with a clean sound.
Most players need distortion to sound good.
Take away this and much players sound crap.

He may not be the fastest guitarist in the world, but I believe it’s about so much more than just speed. For me it’s his unique combination of melodic-but-edgy guitar with pitch-perfect, crisp, soulful voice. I love the way he has brought soul and blues together so beautifully.
