Is it ok if I immediatly stop smoking after I found out I was pregnant?

stop smoking
nadia d asked:

I know smoking is bad for the baby and it can lead to having a premature birth. But I was told about a lot of pregnant women that you should not stop immediatly cause whatever you go throught the baby goes through. I smoke a lot less then what I used too smoke and I tend to stop smoking as soon as I feel ok to do it.

The sooner you stop, the less likely your baby will have health problems.

It’s absolutely okay to stop smoking immediately!! It won’t harm your baby in the least!! That’s the best thing you can do!

YES, its a great step for the child and you and also any other persons you are around who smoke should steop out of your house to do so. The smoke lingers very long time and sticks on windows and furniture. A babys tiny lungs cant conbat it. *mamatx

I have also been a smoker during pregnancy and it’s hard to quit, but quitting is more of a benefit to the baby, the baby isn’t addicted to nicotine, you are. I would just do your best, the sooner you quit the better, or the less you smoke the better. Don’t let people beat you up over this question. You will be ok. Congratulations and best wishes on your pregnancy. You are doing a good thing trying to quit ♥

It is actually better to do it gradually because you stop all at once it can put stress on the baby and do more harm then smoking.

Obviously, the sooner you quit the better it is, for your health AND the baby’s.

However, if you go through massive withdrawals, the baby will be affected too.

So it will depend on how you react, how much you smoke, how much you can reduce without traumatising yourself etc. If you smoke a pack a day, then going cold turkey and quitting completely may be traumatic for you…and therefore it will be traumatic for the baby.

So it is all individual. No one can tell you for sure how you will react online. Obviously, the sooner you quit the better it is. But if its going to be a traumatic time, then sometimes it is better to withdraw cigarettes slowly, and cutting down on your daily amount. Even if you cut down from 20 a day down to 5 a day, it is better than nothing.

The cold turkey option is not always the best option for dependant, heavy smokers. Nicotine replacement therapy is also another option, although you will have to see your Dr about this. Even though it is contraindicated in pregnancy, the doctor will weigh up the risks vs benefits…it is actually better for the body and baby to be getting a controlled amount of nicotine in a patch or gum etc, than to have a mother continue smoking and putting god-knows-what chemicals into her baby’s body. So this is anther option, if you feel that you can’t handle quitting straight away.

I’m gonna be brutally honest here. I am a hardcore smoker. I smoked all through my pregnancy with my daughter, and I haven’t quit even though I’m 30 weeks pregnant with my son. Now, while I haven’t quit, I have done my absolute best to cut down to as minimal an amount as I can. Some days I’ll smoke three cigarettes, somedays I’ll smoke 20. My doctor advised that I should try quitting, but if I couldn’t do it, then I was to reduce the amount that I was smoking. Even cutting back is extremely beneficial to the baby. Good luck!
And for the record, my daughter is perfect… God willing, my son will be too~!
